My life has endless blank pages…

Hometown Racing

I spent a few elementary years + all of high school in Fairfield, CA.  It’s where most of my family lives now (Air Force base is there and that’s where my grandpa retired).  It’s the place that always sucks you back in, no matter how many times you leave 🙂 It was ok growing up, but has gone waaayyyy downhill since I graduated from high school.  Violence, crime and overall ghetto-ness has creeped it’s way in.  I mean, just a couple days ago, they found a teenage girls body in a park in the middle of town (another reason to 1. not go out alone, 2. not hang out in that area of town at night, and 3. just in general: STAY HOME).

A few weeks ago I saw on Facebook that a running company based in Towson, MD is now putting on a running festival in Fairfield this April.  There’s a 5k, a 10k and this year a 1/2 marathon.  I thought it might be a good idea to do the half since it’s in town (aka, won’t need to really pay attention since I can’t get lost), I’ll get to run down main streets in town that I’ve driven down a million times before, there’s more of a chance that old friends will also run it (aka fun times during the race and killer after party/stuff your face session), and my family has no excuse to not watch me race (ha!).  Then I forgot about it since I had so many other things on my mind.

Then last week a friend from HS sent me a text message asking if I’d be interested in running in the running festival, supporting another HS friend that is running for city council. I told her I had thought about the race awhile back, but wasn’t sure, and asked how much the registration was.  She said since I was doing the 1/2, they would cover my reg fee. SOLD! Don’t have to tell me twice when the registration is free! So on April 13th, I will toe the line with friends from high school (at least a couple half marathoners) and wave to those starting later for the 5k and 10k, watch them take off, and then finish about a half hour behind them 🙂 all while sporting our Vote for Joe! shirts.

I’m really excited to run a smaller race (aka not a RnR with 30,000 other people), but really hope it doesn’t cause me to be the last finisher!

Do any of you have local races that you love?

  1. Go sheena! I signed up to volunteer so I’ll cheer you one from the sidelines!

Ummm…I’ll “Run for Joe” if I can do it for free. Any more free regs up for grabs? Oh, and you NEED to sign up for the American River Parkway Half on May 4th. BEST race in California, I’m sure of it.

    • I’ll try to find out if there’s any free regs left. I’ve been HORRIBLE about running since… October. That’s so bad. October 7 was my last 1/2 and anything after that has even on and off gym dates with no outdoor running, so sad 😦

  3. Sounds like a fun time! And you can’t beat the price!
There is a small marathon/half marathon about an hour from my house. I ran the half last year with a bunch of friends and will be running it again this year (April 7) and we have even more friends going this time. I think we Columbus-folk will take over the event! I don’t think there are 1000 registrants. 🙂

(BTW, the hair product I use is S Factor smoothing serum. It’s not greasy and doesn’t stay crunchy either. Especially now that I’m using less! My hair is also thin, the curls make it look thinker than it is.)
